I took my boat to the lake for the first time. I bought a 1995 Bayliner 1850 with the 3.0 Mercruser. We launched and in route to our swim/ski spot the boat was gaining rpms but not as much speed. The redlin is 4500 and i was hitting this in no time with little speed(20 mph). Whil pullin a knee board same thing. We went back in for lunch and when we came out the boat was really moving. 4000 rpm 35 mph. Then is started having trouble gettin on plane and getting up to 4500 rpm really quik and not moving very fast. Is this a spun prop???

:( sounds like it
take it out of the water, put some kind of a paint mark om the nut that holds the prop on and bring the mark out to the prop, put her back in the water, start it put it in gear move it a ways, then put it back on the trailer, check the paint mark,if it dont line up like when you put it on. thats your answer

Was your drive maybe trimmed to far up?

Does sound like a spun prop btu too mush trim would also do that.

no, there were no weeds. I had the trim all the way down. Is a spun prop a fairly easy fix. I am a mechanice in the Marines, but i have never messed with boats.
Thanks

If it's spun, you will need to send it out to have it rehubbed. I just had one done two weeks ago. Sent it out on Wednesday night and had it back on Friday. Takes about five minutes to changed the prop. Good idea to buy one and have a spare then get the one that is spun rehubbed. That's what I did. Of course I was on vacation when I spun mine.

I posted the name of the company in Michigan that did mine. It was something like Taylor and sons. If you need the information I have it at home. Only charged me $32 including return shipping.

any marina, boat dealer, or boat repair shop can send your prop out to be rehubbed.

The marina wanted $120 to have mine done. I got it done for $44 with the cost of shipping being $24. So the rehub itself was around $20. They quoted me $40-50 and did it for $32 with the shipping included and had it back to me the next day.

Here is who did mine: Henry H. Smith & Co. in Algonac, MI. You can Google them.

Re: RPMs no speed... help?????

Talked to the guy at the prop shoo. He said if the prop was spun it would have never gotten on plane. Could it be the tach is inop showing me more rpm than what i am actually running? I know I sound like a ra-tard, but i was putting around with my daughter on a tube at like 5mph and the rpm gage showd 4000, but the engine didnt sound rapped out. ?????

It could be a tach, but your first post seems inconsistent with the daughter and tube story. I am mostly concerned about "having trouble getting on plane" part . . . Can you elaborate a little more?

I would typically believe what the prop shop guy said, but I have heard a few times here of props that are spun but make some speed too.

Props can rev like a spun hub or severe ventilation with weeds on them . . .

ahhh ok, now it makes perfect sense. I'm a newb. I have heard people talking about having to reverse the motor to expel weeds. I see why.

Thanks so much!

he ment that if the prop was wrapped with weeds it would loose its grip and more or less free wheel.

not all props have to be rehubbed when spun..... Many have a square plastic fuse that you can change yourself in a couple minutes

Re: RPMs no speed... help?????

The funny thing about a spun hub is that they don't always go from good to bad at once. It might slip then you try to get on plane again and it holds but will slip again very soon. A spun engine coupler will act the same as a spun hub will. Look in your engine compartment and see if you have bits of rubber slung around, if not, point your finger at the prop hub.

A spare prop is a good idea in any case. One that was refered to with the delrin sleeve is called a Flo Torque. The sleeve takes the place of the rubber hub. Rather then having to have it re hubbed, you simply remove the broken sleeve and replace it with a spare. You can do this while on the water if you can lift your drive and get to the hub and be back in business. I believe the sleeves are around $30.00.

As for the tach, try to just tap on the gage before you try anything else with it. Sometimes moisture will get in there and make the needle stick and give you a strange reading.

Good luck.

I never really had trouble getting on plane, i was just backing off because the rpm were over redline.
