I need to put in a lower gearcase sealer kit, but cannot find the right adhesive for the housing gasket.
Clymer calls for OMC Adhesive M, but posts online have described these substitutes:
"Type M is also Marpox sealer 1000, now called Boat Armour Sealer 1000. At an auto parts supplier, it is 3M #847."
In Cleveland, OH, I've been to both our marines, and called a ton of auto parts stores, including Summit Racing, which said they have 5-6 pages of 3M adhesives, but they all have 4 digits. They weren't the first shop to be baffled by 3 digits. Has 847 been superseded? How come none of the local stores carry it, let alone heard of 3 digit 3M adhesives? What do others recommend?
I considered Permatex Ultra Black, but some said it can be hard to remove after 3 years. I'd rather be able to open it back up down the road without concern.
While I'm happy to pay to do it right, I don't want to blow $20 on an online order for adhesive for just one gasket and wait for it to be arrive if there is something I can pick up locally and have this done this weekend.
