I have an 85 evinrude 140hp. This weekend I took it out to blow the cobwebs out as have been redoing floors and interior and has not been in water for over a year. While running I had intermittent electrical problems(I thought loose ground) and when the day was over when I got to the dock and tilted the motor up a large amount of water came out of the front of the motor......is there suppose to be a drain inside the lower cowling? when at home I lowered the motor and poured some water in the lower cowling and it didn't seem to want to drain.....I have no clue as to how the water was getting in but figured I would start with if in is there a way to get it out short of tilting the motor......also the rubber seal on the hood seems like it has shrunk a little but not that bad and I don't know how that much water could have gotten by........

At home...on muffs...start your engine with the cover off.. I think you may have a leaky gasket or something casuing water to get in there...

I'd look at the powerhead gasket (the one that the entire motor sits on)..i would also be sure all of the water hoses are tight and also chheck the areas where the tstats are... you should be able to locate it.

to your point..the bottom cowling and the top mate together.. there isnt the best seal at the bottom becasue it does shrink over time so you really shouldnt have accumulated enough water to cause electrical issue unless its spraying in there...

Take a look...you will see where its coming from...

Check the shift shaft seal in the adaptor housing. Kinda common for those to leak on that model. Under way water will push up the shaft and ends up in the pan area. Later model V4 loopers had an aspirator to help siphon water out of the pan area.

Was the telltale functioning properly? If the hose came off the nozzle inside the lower cowling, it will fill with water. Also, check for minor water leaks at the head covers, thermostat housing and outer exhaust cover.
