115 V4 lower unit interchangeability

I have 1980 115hp V4 that broke something in the lower unit and put a small through the case on each side so now I need a new one.

I have found a 1976 engine at the right price with a supposedly good LU but can't determine if the units are interchangeable before I plunk down the cash to buy it.

The 76 is model 115EL76
and the '80 one is J115TLCS.

Any help here is appreciated.

Thanks!

It will not work.

1978 through 1991 crossflow 13 spline prop shaft with the same driveshaft length as yours will work.

ezeke,

I have the same question on an '82 115TLCN - I found a replacement lower unit from a '79, but it it is the short shaft. Can I swap my driveshaft into the other lower unit to make it work?

To Alnt: I don't think that the 1979 V4 units were available except in Long (like yours) and Extra Long. Have the seller measure the driveshaft and compare it to yours.

I would suspect that since there are only 2 shaft lengths available. many guys would call them long and short, even though the "short" is 20".

15" is short (no letter in the model number), 20" is long (L in the model number), 25" is extra long (XL in the model number).

There are also less common 22-1/2" Y models and 30" Z models as you see, but long is 20 inches.

Lots of things are easier when you use the same language.

yes, but my point is that two long time outboard mechanics are dealing with each other and one calls the other and asks for a LU for that motor...

the guys asks long or short, and gets short for an answer....he knows he is getting a 20" LU!!!

because they only made two sizes and he wants the shorter of those two sizes...

so i am saying that it could be "called" a short shaft....when it technically isnt
