I am having trouble starting motor after the boat sits for a week or two. What I have been told is the VRO for the oil is leaking oil into the carb. Can this be true? If so what can be done? Should I replace the VRO unit? I might not be totally sure what that unit is called. Can anyone recommend a good manual? The device is to the right side of the carbs looking at the motor in the boat. Any help will be apprecieated.

Re: 40HP Johnson Oil VRO

I've got a 95 - 40 HP that is hard to start after a few days of not running. I can't see how the oil would be filling the carbs. as the oil tank is vented. I just got this motor and at present I'm hoping I'm just needing to learn how it likes to start. When mine does start I get a fair bit of smoke for the first 15 seconds so it seems to me like it's flooded. Day to day it starts like a charm. I'll be watching your post as it may help me as well. Best of luck. Rick.

Thanks for the reply. Same here day to day starts up no issues, turn the key. The information that I got about oil leaking/filling the carb I got online from a Johnson Outboard Mechanic. I am hoping for some insight from others. I would like to just start the motor and go.
