What I mean by that is, the boat doesn't seem to be going as fast as the engine sounds - if that makes sense. I can throttle up to about 4k RPM and the boat doesn't go above 25 MPH or so. The red line is quite a bit higher (7k I think), but I don't know if it's safe to run higher than 4k RPM.

Is this normal? Should I be worried about running the engine at high RPMs?

Is it possible this is a prop issue? I have noticed that it takes quite a long time for the speed of the boat to respond to throttle increases.

Thanks,
CB

Ayuh,... It sounds like it,... try the Prop forum...
We gotta know What motor,+ What drive...

Most motors redline at 4600/ 4800 rpms...

I have a 97 Four Winns Horizon 180 with a 3.0 Volvo Penta. The prop and everything is stock. My boat will easily go over 40mph when the water is reasonably smooth. I would think yours SHOULD too, with the stock prop.

Sounds normal for an outboard. What engine does it have?
