what kind of anchor is best?

I went out and bought a second anchor for my boat to see if it would hold better than the one I already had. the original one I got with the boat is a claw anchor. It wasn't holding so I went out and bought a fluke anchor but this one doesn't seem to be any better.

The boat is a 20 ft boat and the new anchor I bought is rated for 20 ft.

any tips on how to get it to grab hold better?

The bottom where I've been trying to anchor is primarily muck and weeds so I realize its not the best situation. I see a lot of the other boats around anchored while fishing without a problem. I thought of getting a bigger anchor but I don't want to get something too heavy or overrated for the boat.

I like one size over (Fluke) and a boat lengths worth of chain . . . What sort of rode and scope are you using?

I like navy anchors the best. they are heavy but worth it IMO. I have 8' of chain on 200' of rhode and it holds great.

Dont laugh but I have a retaining wall block. One of the smaller size - about 30#. cinched tightly in a cheapo ratchet strap - secured to 100' of rope.
I have a 20' seaswirl i/o about 2500#. always worked great. Fits perfect under the bench seat. Best part it was free:p

Im not too cheap to buy a proper anchor, I just know as soon as I spend the money on one, Ill get it stuck in rocks and have to cut it...so it aint goin anywhere.

Its one of these:anchor.jpg

I anchor on a small lake primarily muck and mud with heavy weed cover.

My navy anchor never moves.

thanks for the replies everyone. I may return the one I have and try one of the navy anchors.

Nelson,

how heavy is your anchor, and how big is the boat?

I'm sorry , you'll have to excuse my ignorance, but what's a scope?( still kinda new to the boating thing)

rode is the anchor line , right? I'm using a 200 ft nylon line with about 3ft of chain attached to it.

Nelson,

how heavy is your anchor, and how big is the boat?

My first was a 17' with a 15lb

My current is 19' with a way oversized 28lb (didn't have a 20lb in stock)

However, a friend is hold his 23' with a 20lb in the same lake no problems.

If you don't mind the extra weight, I'd get one a few extra pounds and the right amount of rope
