when in gear at idle speed. Just like the prop hit something and killed the engine. Doesn't matter whether its forward or reverse. Once it is above idle speed runs great with no clunks ever. No metal shavings in the lower unit although it is getting contaminated with water.

Seemed to start doing this after i changed the water pump and i did make sure to adjust the shift rod per specs.

Does this sound like a shift rod problem or a LU problem? If it was the LU, wouldn't it clunk at all speeds?

You will not be able to set the idle accurately on muffs, no backpressure on the exhaust.
I think your manual will tell you to set the idle in the water with it in gear.

i ran out and checked the prop....the nut was pretty loose but still had the cotter pin in. tightened the nut up and installed new pin. think that might make a difference?
