Question about my outboard.. I am in the process of buying a NEW 2010 pontoon boat.. I have had on demo all weekend... The boat is a new 2010 Triton pontoon.. It has a 90 H.P. 2 stroke engine on it.. It has the carbs (not fuel injected).. The dealer told me that it was a 2010 model... A buddy of mine wanted to see them engine and we took the cover off and there was a stamp that said Oct 2008.. He also told me that they didnt make the 2 stroke carb engines any more.. So is the a 2010 engine or a 2008 engine.. Here is the serial number of the engine..1B731659.. I wanna make sure that the dealer isnt trying to hoo doo me on this.. Thanks in advance for any help..

Re: 2010 or not??

There are 4 two-stroke engines still being made (but not available in CA). They are a V6 150hp (EFI), a 90hp (Carbed), a 65hp Jet (also carbed) and a 50hp (also carbed).

As to that particular engine being 2010, Mecr can designate a year model to an engine by the year is was sold... But it could be a nice bargaining chip you have...

What make engine?

One would think if the post is in the "Merc & Mariner Outboards" forum it would be a Merc or Mariner (and since they are the same engine it doesn't really matter.....

Like I said.. There is a sticker in plain view ont he head of the engine that say Oct 2008.. Then under the engine where the trim cyl is there is another tag with some numbers and it is Oct 2008... This make me think that the engine was made in Oct 2008.. Dont get me wrong.. I dont care that its a 2008.. But that is what I wanna pay for and not be paying for a 2010 an getting a 2008...

Like I said, you can use it to really push the price down... A 2008 90hp is exactly the same as a 2010 90hp.... just built in different years.
I'd pull the guy up on it and work him over... Walk out of there with a great deal and leave him crying. :D (yes, I'm a bastard to lying salesmen)

And you are correct that engine is a 08 model just like the sticker said it is.;) The engine was made on 10/01/2008.

Re: 2010 or not??

Here's what I'd do...

Don't say anything about seeing the year on the engine. Get the guy to write up the deal, and make sure he puts on paper that it is a 2010 engine and boat. Then have another look at the boat, this time 'notice' the year on the engine. Ask him to write up a new deal, but this time for a couple of thousand less. If he baulks, start talking about seeing his boss, or maybe some government agency that deals with deceptive salesmen... I'm sure he'll write it up for any price you want. :D:D:D

yep,you can,if done right, get a little extra deal on it!a brand new motor is a brand new motor.they know its a 2008 motor and title will say so.so after you negotiate your best price and get it on paper,as long as he hasnt mentioned it being a new 2008 motor, you then renegotiate HARD.or,you take best price you negotiated before and since they knew beforehand and probably negotiated price w/it in mind, you take their price and suggest they swap the motor for a 2010 model.either way youre going to get some money off this deal.
