Wasnt sure where to post this. its a motor question, but not a repair or maintenance question.

anyone have any direct knowlege of the difference in motors? I'm tired of messing with my old merc 8 hp, on my jonboat, and am going to treat myself to a new motor with warrunty. My boat ran 19 mph with the 8 hp, and im wondering what the benefit of going 9.9 would be. both motors weigh 81 lbs, and the cost difference is $300. It is a nissan 4 stroke. 1.9 horsepower doesnt sound much, but its 20%. thanks!

Re: 8 hp vs 9.9

A brand new 8 horse will have better compression and as a result more power than your old 8 horse. I can't imagine wanting to go over 20mph on a john boat, let alone paying an extra $300 to do it. There are too many variables to say for sure what the speed difference would be between the two, but it doesn't seem worth the price difference to me. Welcome to iboats.

While you're at it, check prices on Tohatsu since they make the Nissan (also Mercury). Might be a little cheaper.

If you look for an older used 9.9 they are actually built for 15hp with a carb restricting the power to 9.9. And 8 vs. 15 is a big jump.
