Need opinion on what you all think on who makes good deck boats. Owned My seaswirl 190 SE now for several years but family is outgrowing the boat. We need more room I looked at the Chaparrel and Sea Ray Deck boats this past weekendnand they are fantastic lots of room and that is what we are looking for. Do not want to buy new. Did that already with Sea Swirl but must have paid off because have not had any problems. I welcome any comment suggestions thank you

I assume Hurricane is a good deck boat as they all seem to be priced at a premium.

Re: Deck boats

We have a Sea Ray Sundeck 200 {21'} and while it is a great boat, it is more of a hybrid deck/runabout than a true deck boat. Personally, I like the hybrid...to me it has the best of both. A wider front with more room up there as well as a front ladder while it still has more hull rise and handles the bumps better than a standard deck boat. The downside is that the capacity is less than a true deck boat of the same size. My boating bud has a Four Winns Funship deckboat and it is also a great boat. I think his is rated for 11 persons and mine is at 8....

I think the Sea Ray is a little more solid, but it is also heavier.

Just my $.02

The best thing about deckboats is that they seem to have a large variety of layouts for seating/application. You can find a layout/manufacturer who meets the needs of your particular needs. There's usually only 2-3 ways you can layout a true v-bottom in regards to seating, but the deckboats tend to have 5-6 layouts that serve different functions (cruiser, watersports, fishing, etc).

We have a 2005 Four Winns 230 Funship, we love it ,plenty of room and rides nice. We have 170 hours on it with no complaints.

Love our Starcraft deck boat, but SeaRay builds a better boat.
I own both.

I would have gone with a SeaRay if the Starcraft had not come with the house.

Every boat is a compromise in one area or another...

Deck boats give you a great layout and lots of room topside, but the hull design will ride rougher in big waves than a comparable V hull. Deckboats are the modern trihulls, they essentially have identical hulls to a '70's trihull, with more weight to help soften things up some.

Yep. I would stay away from flat bottomed decks. Even ours, or Hurricanes, offer a great dihedral hull. It's still harsh in the rough stuff.

Great layouts and you can do all your water sports, though.

I own one of these boats and they are awesome! The ride is incredible and they have plenty of power and speed as well. They plane out and ride at a slower speed as well for longer cruising. They are a great company to work with as well; I highly recommend them.

I wouldn't say "identical", but similar. They really are a hybrid of the v and the tri-hull. The old tri-hulls has the sides go as deep as the center-v. The newer deck boats have the modified-v which only extends 1/2-way down the cenver-v. Which gives them the softer ride (in addition to some extra weight). Either way, they are the suv of the recreational boats. Hold lots of people, open layout, can go/do anything with moderate grace. they just don't excel in any one category.

Re: Deck boats

I love my ChrisCraft 23 foot SportDeck, but wish it was a little lighter in weight. I guess the weight is one of the trade-offs for the versatility of the design. Mine has the modified v-hull, and goes over wakes pretty good. Many deck boats don't have a full windshield, which can be a pain for the non drivers in the boat. A center walkway folding door is nice, too, to keep the wind off the passengers on those cool mornings. The onboard head is nice, but only an Olympic gymnist could use one.
