How do I tell if my 1981 70 HP Johnson model#J70ELCI is cross-flow or loop-charged?

Cross flow - the loopers came out later.

Solittle,

Thanks for the quick response. I've been trying to find that out for 7 years!

That engine is looped charged. Check the factory parts list breakdown. You will see port holes in the side of the piston skirts.

The OMC triple looper was 20 years ahead of the market when introduced in the late 60s.

I am amazed that Solittle didn't remember that.

Re: Cross-Flow or Loop-Charged?

In 2-strokes, loop charging and cross charging are the common methods of induction - bringing fuel into the cylinder chamber. Cross charging came first, with the design having intake and exhaust ports across from either other and the fuel traveling from the intake side to the exhaust side, crossing the dome of the piston. Loop charging was a later development (1950s or so) where the intake ports are arranged in such a way that the fuel loops under the spark plug on its way through the combustion chamber. Results in a more efficient burn and more power per cubic inch.
