I'm new to this forum, so forgive me for a question that has probably already been asked. I have a Bayliner openbow with a 4 year old 5.0L mercruiser/Alpha 1 I/O. I hit some rocks last summer, tore up the propr, and immediately after that, the engine over heated very quickly. It has a salt water intake and I've since replaced the prop, but it still overheats. Where do I begin to look for the cause? Do these salt water intakes on the bottom of the boat suck thinghs up into them. First one of these I've every owned. Thanks.

Re: Overheating

Is it 100% raw water cooled or do yo have a heat exchanger with glycol (antifreeze) under the doghouse??

I would think your impeller need to be replacced in the outdrive...that is basically a water pump that feeds water up to the engine..either to a heat exchanger or right through it..

Re: Overheating

Sounds like an impeller job is needed. If the prop is damaged / dinged you may want to put on a relpacement. Do yourself a favor and visit the " Adults Only" stickey thread at the top of this forum page that Don S has provided and download the service manual for your application. The intakes will take in salt or fresh water.

Re: Overheating

If it has a "Scupper" it probably doesn't have an impeller in the drive, rather one on the engine. But all the same it's most likely time for a new impeller.

How do you run it at home on the trailer? Where do you put water to it?

Re: Overheating

I have been thinking impeller, but not sure which one (lower unit or water pump) due to the fact that it happened after hitting rocks and I have that sea water intake on the bottom of the boat. Thought maybe the hull intake could have sucked up sand or small rocks or something.

backflush that baby and see what blows out something is definately logged to much of a coinsidence right after you grounded the boat

why would we all assume it's the impeller with the chain of events he described. unless we meant the impeller in the bottom of the boat and in that case perhaps its the housing scored by sand and impeller cant work effeciently

Ahhhh.....thank you guys once again for the suggestions....the clogged idea sounds like the place to start. Will try that this weekend. I'm guessing that back flushing simply entails disconnecting the input hose to the salt water pump and forcing water out through the intake hose/outlet under the boat?..... and the same would go for the other side of the pump to see if something is in the pump?

Re: Overheating

Hey Guys, Not puttin ya'all off..... been having a hard time getting to it. I pulled all of the hoses off of the main T above the engine water pump and found a little piece of impeller in the small T where the two little spring loaded balls are. Looked like about 1/2" off of the end of one of the impeller blades. Water will go up through the intake and come out of the large water hose (which goes into that main T), but I could not get any water to come OUT of the intake by flushing down through any of the hoses. The water looks to be circulating throughout the engine and heat exchangers OK. The battery was dead, so I couldn't start it to see if that little piece was the culprit. Got the battery charging and will see how it runs first chance I get. Thanks again for all the input.
