I have a 2005 4 stroke suzuki 9.9. Could someone help explain how to get water into the cylinders through the exhaust system? Does something have to brake for that to happen? Thanks for any input.

Does this motor have a anti-ingestion device to prevent intake through the exhaust?

I do not think it helps to keep starting new threads asking the same question, if some one has an answer they will post it. You can bump^^ it up to the top of the forum from time to time,

but if think about it I would think on a 4 stroke if the exhaust valve is open and there is water present it will come in to the cylinder. now the question is what caused the water to be there for the valve to let it in. Wave up the back, water hose, submersion, rain with the motor up,etc.

no
a burned valve or improper cam timing can do it.
launching the boat to violently can do it as can a motor that simply sits to low in the water with the engine off,250lb dude, cooler of refresing beverages heavy 4 stroke 9.9 on a 14 tinny, motor can get to low.

Rodbolt you need to look at his other posts to get an idea of what is going on, that is why if mentioned to keep it all in one thread

that engines mostly toast.
needs to be further dissasemble to check for crank or rod damage.
like I say, blown head gaskets, stuck sticking or burned exhaust valves,an ign miss all can lead to injestion.
that one looks like it either sunk or as backed down the ramp to rapidly and filled thatway.

Re: water ingestion through exhaust

Now were getting somewhere. This is my engine and I can assure you it was not sunk. Looking at the exterior of the motor there is no indication of corrosion. My theory is internal.

How long does it look like this corrosion has been there. Weeks, months, year and half? Does it look like the rust and corrosion entered at different times?

For water to enter through the exhaust, would there have to be something broken? From the exhaust side, would water somehow enter from the valves? Or would it possibly enter under the head gasket.

I am asking because this motor is under warranty and the local shop has accused my of submerging this motor. It's a kicker on a 21 ft Thunder Jet. My 140 HP is just fine. It if was submerged, my boat is at the bottom of the river. Honestly I haven't worked on the motor or abused it.

I'm just looking for reasoning and explanation for water entering on a chronic basis and malfunction.

Thank you for your input. I really appreciate it.

In my opinion it does not look like a chronic situation. For the head and valve to show a water level across it with the rust line it would not run with that much water in the cylinder, it would lock up when the piston came to TDC. A kiker is tilted up most of the time and maybe someone washed it too good and sprayed water up the exhaust while the valve was in the wrong position

I see what your talking about with the lighter color rust. But what about the darker colors of rust? Doesn't it seem like rust accumulated at different times? If rust came up through the exhaust, is there anywhere else I would see rust build up?

Thanks again for giving you input. Dave
