Hello all, i recently bought this boat to fix up for a fishing rig. I'm new here and new to working on boats. Figured i would show you guys some pics of the project. Comments always appreciated. This is one heck of an amazing resource here, i may be able to pull this off if i hang around here for a while.
I finished gutting this and now started all the body work.
enjoy the photos, Jay.

Welcome,

There are quite a few starcraft nuts on this board, myself included. Check out the boat restoration threads there are alot of us in there.

The hull looks identical to my 74 18' SS.

Were they called offshore in earlier years?

What year is it?

Welcome!

I was thinking a ss that someone added a center console to, but after zooming in on the id plate it has offshore stamped on it.

My 18' offshore has the split consoles with the walk through windshield like an SS. Looks like someone modified yours to be a center console.

Mine is a 1971 I/O, they made an SS that year too. So they are different boats. I'm not sure what the difference is but I think it's the hull design.

Chinewalker talks about the hull design in this thread. Very interesting.

I don't have the 68 brochure so the first year I can find the off shore is in 69. Looks just like the ss even has the same stuff inside but the brochure says the offshore hull design is set up for big water.

They definately were not center consoles. Someone has altered you boat.

Thanks for the info guys, appreciate it. I am planning on putting the center console back in, just looking to get out there and catch some fish. :)

I look forward to pictures. Center consoles are fishing machines.

Well i finished powerwashing the boat. Here's some pics of the progress. I used a zero degree rotating tip, it worked great!

Re: starcraft 18 offshore v project

So i have a question for you guys.

I started to feather out the paint with a wire wheel on the bottom of the hull. I noticed that there is tons of greenish (patina looking) paint under the top coat.
Could this be a copper antifouling paint? if so doesn't copper and aluminum not mix very well? Should i strip it with some chemicals and powerwash again to get any residue off and then prime with zinc chromate? Or is it fine to just continue to feather out and then prime?
Here are some pics of the green patina looking stuff.
Thanks for any input, greatly appreciated...

Looks like zinc chromate (sp?) paint from the factory to me.

Any one else think that that green is just factory zinc chromate?

I don't know what it is, but I highly doubt it is incorrect bottom paint.

I agree that it looks like anti-fouling bottom hull paint. If hasn't caused any damage yet I'd leave it and paint over unless it needs to be stripped to smooth it out.

Nice rig, look forward to seeing her back on the water catching fish:)

HA, I don't think you can paint over bottom paint. I would think if you did, your top coat would immediately fail. I think it's just old regular paint under there.

Re: starcraft 18 offshore v project

If it was mine I would strip it. Use the citrus stripper that Hopeshefloats (Kenny) used. It looks easy to use and appears to have done a great job for Kenny.

Once it's stripped then prime and paint. That's foolproof. Why risk it? The boat is all ready flipped. Don't take a chance. You've got a lot of time in it to this point, go ahead and strip it down.

My .02 cents on this. I mean it's an Offshore, nothing is too good. Nothing.:p

Re: starcraft 18 offshore v project

Thanks for all the replies! I think stripping it may be what i end up doing, at this point there's not much paint left on there.
What do you guys think about the transom i have here? I have a sheet of al that i wanted to have welded onto the back. A welder tells me he can do this no problem, but others have told me you can't weld old aluminum very well.

Would thru bolting the sheet to the plywood transom with a ton of 5200 be a possible last resort option? maybe have 4-6 inches of overlap on the Al.

Re: starcraft 18 offshore v project

Another member had the outdrive hole on his older Islander welded up perfectly. So I would think your plan would be no trouble for a skilled welder.
