Can you tell the approximate age of this outboard?

Hey guys. I know you probably cant tell me much from this picture but for now it's all I've got. I was just wondering if you could tell an approximate age by it's looks. I mean like is it late 70s 80s etc. I may purchase it as a fixer for short money. Owner says low comp on one cyl. He doesn't seem to know much about it but before I head over to look at it I was just wondering if y'all migh know how old it might be. Thanks in advance!

Sorry. Not sure why the pic didn't work but it should be good now. Its a mercury 25 hp and the seller says it has low compression on one cylinder. Any ideas? Is this the kind of motor that doesn't have a removable head? You would have to hone/bore through the crank side if that's the case, correct? Thanks!

If you can get the serial number, the first thread in this post can give you the year.

yeah, I know. Thanks though for the heads up. I don't have the serial. I was simply looking for a ballpark before I went to see it. The seller doesnt really know or care much. Once I go see it I can see the serial, but I won't be able to look it up on the spot. I saw the thing about blue band vs brown vs red. Not sure exactly what "band" this would be. Its got a red stripe but the red band motors are older than what this one looks like.

Its a mid 80's the serial number will tell the exact year. It should have a removeable head, not like the inline 6s .

You're correct; that motor is newer than the ones where the red band/blue band rules would apply.

I would guess from looking at the cowl that it's a late 80's or early 90's....

Doesn't really matter much; although I understand that you'd like to know.

The condition means way more than the age.

That's all I was looking for. Thanks guys. I appreciate it. I think I'll probably pick it up. Maybe I'll print out the ser# sheet and bring it with me to find out for sure. Guy wants 200 with controls. I figure that's decent. I'll either fix it and rig it to my jon boat or fix it up and sell it. I really just want some practice for when I rebuild my 150 HP XR4 for my bass boat.

Was that motor in a fire? All the paint is all bubbled

I think it's sitting in the rain, I think that's water, not bubbles on the paint.

I just noticed what you were talking about with the paint. If you dont look at the pallet its laying to see that its wet & thats water on the motor it does look like bubbled paint.:D

Oh, and to address the original post, looks like a mid to late 80's to me. Low compression indicates piston problem in general. Most common reason is running lean/improper oil in fuel. Since you want practice anyway, $200 is probably not TOO badd. Since you're getting the controller and cables too, I could see taking it on for that.

Ha. I see what you guys mean about the paint. The picture I have is much larger and you can see they are water drops. It's been raining here for days. Thanks for the input. I might go see it today and we'll see how it goes.
