Is it possible to troll with this motor or will it mess up the motor? Just curious..... What type of grease should I use to fill up the nipples with? Plus when starting the motor after sitting for a day or 2. It seems to be a little hard to start. Takes about 4-5 tries to getter going ? Is there something wrong or is this normal?

Hi sbrunt i have the same year merc as you do, and yes some times not always but i do have few times to start it, esp when its been cold, i have found that if you empty the carbs of gas after you get home then pump clean new gas in when you start the engine it starts better and idles better, prime bulb turn key push choke in till it coughs once then lift up the leaver and turn key and it starts
as for trolling i do 6.2 knots not a worry at all for skippys aka tuna and marlin. as for the grease use the correct marine grease and you will be fine.

Ditto, mine will troll at idle, or any RPM I set it all, all day. And it doesn't eat a much fuel trolling at 1000 running on only the top two cyl's.

With the carbs dialed in(floats @ 1/32" low from dead level, Accel pump set to .025" at WOT, idles fine and revs the second I hit it.

Turning a QuickSilver LazerII 22(or is it a 23?) SS vented, instantly jumps my ProCraft 18 Fish-n-Ski out of the water at @6200 RPM, noses over then the prop bites, tach droops to @ 5200 and the motor quickly accelerates back to 6150, but I usually pull it back and just run a comfortable 4800 which is about 32 -35 MPH, less if I'm taking the G'kids out or pulling them on a tube.

Fuel use is light as I don't go very far, only once in a while take the G'kids tubing, then I can burn 12 - 15 US Gallons in a day.

Crikey! thats a lot of gas to use :) i had to turn my engine down cause it was idling high now its going great

i tuned it in the barrel as i needed back pressure as you can hear on the vid it sounds great. i have a 19" pitch LazerII S/S and it gets me up on the plane quick as well WOT is 45=5500rpm's @25mph depends on load i carry
the gas i use is about 7 gallons/25 liters for 2 hours of trolling but i always get my catch bin filled before that so 1 1/2 hours and then i motor off to anchor up.

Re: 1996 115HP Mercury Outboard

how do you know if there is something wrong with the starter? I just went down to take the boat out and it almost started up then I went back to check to make the sure the gas ball is pumped enough and then I tried to start the motor again and nothing just a woop, woop, woop?? It felt like it wanted to start but nothing. The battery is ok it seemed like all the instruments were working, tilt/trim, depth finder, horn, lights, etc.. Does anybody have an idea????? Help.. LOL

it should engage what do you mean by woop, woop, woop? is that like it's trying to start? or it's just turning over or just a whirring sound ?

I guess the whirring sound??? I sounded like it was trying to do something? You know how it is sometimes to get the motor to start up. 1-3 tries sometimes...

I just went through this... see this thread - http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=419780

For me, the tell tale was that the voltage was dropping down to about 8V when I was cranking, which was caused by a short in the starter I believe. The new starter I just installed spins the motor way faster than it ever did before with a fully charged battery. Night and day difference.

As for starting when cold, I was having to crank it 5 or 6 times to get it going when cold. Even before the new starter was installed I had gotten to where I could get mine running on the first turn of the key (thanks to tips from this forum). I prime the bulb a half dozen or so times until it is really firm. Then I turn the key and let it crank for about 4-5 seconds or so and while still cranking I push and release the key rapidly about a half dozen times. It will almost always crank and stay running by doing that. I raise the fast idle lever slightly for about 10-15 seconds, then release it and I'm good for the day.

The best tip I got was that its very hard to flood this motor so don't be shy with the bulb and pressing the key to engage the injectors. This motor doesn't have a choke... its a direct injection of fuel into the cylinders when you press the key.

Pull the starter out and clean it up and test it on a battery you will see it engage if not then get a new one or second hand one and you will be good to go thats how we tested car starter motors back in the old old days :) but thats just me

Re: 1996 115HP Mercury Outboard

ya turns out it might be the inverter or the coils.. It's not charging the battery so there isn't enough cranking amps to get the sucker started?? I hope it's either one not both??

well so far I was told the motor isn't charging the battery so I was told it's either the inverter or a coil? Damn I hope it's only one. As long as I keep the battery charged it's fine.. Weird, weird, weird...

Not inverter. Rectifier. Get one of those radio shack 35A units that John posts about.
