My 1976 Evinrude seems to run better when the cover is off. When the cover is on, the motor smokes and the engine seems to bog down like it's getting too much fuel or something. Anyone else had this problem?

Its a commen problem with these motors. They develope an exhaust leak over time and choke the engine from fresh air. Also if your running it in a barrel they suck up a lot of exhaust fuems which make them run poorly. Try it out on the lake. Mine runs horrible in a barrel and like a top on the lake.
