I work in computers, but I love boating. Don't get me wrong, I really like the computer work I do, but sometimes I think how cool would it be to work on a boat?

Anyhow, I was just curious what kind of cool on-boat jobs there are out there & what kind of experience/education is required for them? Is there any really cool boating-related jobs that are accessible for a family man with a career in computer system administration?

Aka, how do I dump the stressful job & get a fun one? :)

Not sure about where you live but down here there's lots of marine type jobs here, most don't pay great and are alot more work then you'd think. The closest I'd get anymore is maybe a surveyor or yacht sales.

Ya, see, I want to make 6-figures & be the captain going into the job... that's the catch :)

Have you ever considered applying for a computer system administration position with a boat/outdrive manufacturer? There HAS to be some perks for their employees, lol.

How long until retirement? We went to bikeweek in Florida a couple months back and took a boat cruise. The captain was a retired dude with a charter boat, a really cool guy! He was living his dream, and making decent cash from what he said.

If nothing else, make the money where you can, and live for the weekends!!!

good luck

Man, I count the days until I can live that dream, but more and more I'm afraid retirement is a bygone dream for most of us.

That's a cool idea about working systems administration in the boating industry. The problem is that the same stress exists there as in any company I'd do systems administration in (security concerns, frustrations with non-techies, etc.) & as far as computer-related work goes, I have a really nice gig at the moment :) As a system administrator, I love my job. As a guy living his dream on/around boats, I'm still waiting :)

You missed the part about not wanting to work on a computer, but work as a happy, laid back captain like Captain Ron:
