Evinrude(60HP) all of a sudden RPMs jump

I have a Evinrude 60 hp engine for our pontoon. we were crusing at 4k RPM's and all of a sudden the RPM's went up to 5,6 and w/o us going anywhere. I immediately went to nuetral. I put it in gear and we are going along fine but once I hit about 32kRPM's , it automatically starts to jump and of course we are not going anywhere. Any ideas, suggestions or any help would be appreciated. First time it has done anything like this before. Thank you everyone in advance

If the motor didn't make a violent jerk just before speeding up, it's almost certainly a spun hub in your prop. They can be repaired. Now is also a good time to get a spare prop while you're waiting for your old one to be repaired. You should always carry a spare on the boat.

I hope "32K RPMs" is a typo...otherwise it may be your tach....although i doubt the scale goes that high so it is likely a typo....

Spun hub in the prop. Gets to a certain load and then spins free- will start doing it at progressively lower (slower speed)loads.

As above- check the prop.
