A little history, bought this motor used, always had good top end but idled poor. Had a mechanic put a carb kit in it a couple years ago, still had idle troubles. Haven't used much in the mean time, decided to try to get her idling better this year.

Running in barrel in driveway. Was working on poor idle performance. Had it idling pretty good after installing new fuel pump (disassembled old pump and found parts missing), installed new plugs, removed, cleaned and set low speed jet, fresh gas 50:1 in cruise-a-day.

Anyway...I had the motor idling pretty darn good. Then I revved her up in gear and she starts to go good but slowly bogs down, doesn't stall , just seems to bog out. If i take of the cowling, it runs top end no problem? I was thinking need to redo carb, possible main jet varnish etc, etc BUT it runs fine with the cowling off? I did some searching on the forum, heard a few mentions of exhaust leaks under cowl? any thoughts?

Get it out of that stupid barrel and it will probably run right. It was designed to run on a boat, not in a barrel. It is breathing its own smoke coming up out of the barrel.

yep, I think that's is.

I thought running it in a barrel was standard outboard repair procedure.

I find it hard to work on bobbing around in the waves, I keep dropping my wrenches in the lake.

Hi there, I have the exact same motor and problem not getting the motor to go full bore with the cowel hood off...Likes yours mine runs great without the hood on. Did you ever find out what the cause is to this problem?

I have rebuilt the entire carb and fuel system and this has me baffled.

By the way I ran mine in the barrel and on my boat with the exact same results.

Almost. Standard outboard repair procedure is to take the hood off when running in a tank.

You will find that you will only drop the most expensive tools you own in the lake.

Terry,

It ended up that the barell was my problem, as long as I was getting fresh air it ran fine with cowling on.

One thing I came across when researching this problem was a possible plug wire problem, ie pinching or grounding one of the plug wires when you clamp the cowling down - maybe something to check on yours?
