Oil Question

I wanted to replace the oil on my 2001 Crownline 180. The motor is a 135 HP 3.0l, 4 cylinder. I went to a local store and they gave me a Mercury SAE 10W-30 oil along with a Quicksilver oil filter.

I wanted to know if that is the right oil?

Re: Oil Question

If they gave you the wrong oil you might want to make sure the oil filter is correct.

Re: Oil Question

Well I guess I'm not sure if it is the right oil. I am actually inquiring about this for someone else, as the boat is not mine.

The guy sold me SAE10W-30 Outboard 4-Stroke oil.

The filter is Quicksilver Sterndrive and Inboard 35-866340Q03.

How do I know what engine is with the boat, do I just pop the cover?

Re: Oil Question

You said it is a 3.0L 4 cylinder which is an INBOARD (actually an I/O) and NOT an OUTBOARD. You have the wrong oil and very likely the wrong filter. Use the chart provided. And it is very unwise to be buying parts for stuff you know nothing about. You are not doing yourself nor the boat owner a favor by doing so. Wrong stuff can create very costly issues and possibly a friendship.

Re: Oil Question

You have the correct filter, just the wrong oil. Just take it back and get the right oil for sterndrive engines. It's cheaper too.

The reason I was asking was to be certain. The guy at the store was not too sure and I wanted to double check that.
