No problem, just don't forget to come back and let us know when it's fixed!

If you need anything not in the manual I have a '67 110ss in the garage that works good but needs an impeller. If you need I can take it apart and take pics.

That would be great! Its always nice to see an actual picture of stuff vs a manual. Do you have it as just a spare or are you willing to sell parts if I may need anything.

Re: 1967 Merc 1100 SS Help

I have some interior work to do before I get her in the water. I have the deck all ripped up and everything looks good under there. Just going to get some marine grade and make a new deck, fiberglass it and gel coat. The old wood looked a little shady when I pulled the carpet. Just doing some research first on the gel coat. Looking for some ideas on seating and what not.

Re: 1967 Merc 1100 SS Help

I went through and re-wired the whole boat today. Got everything all tucked away nice and neat with all new wires. I decided to start the boat up today so I grabbed the muffs and turned on the hose. I let it sit and idle for a minute or two then put it in forward for a bit to rev it just a little.

I decided to try reverse and to my surprise it actually went into reverse and the prop started spinning properly. When I put it back into neutral it made a slight grinding sound. Tried it again and it made the same sound as if the gears were slipping. Any thoughts on this?

Re: 1967 Merc 1100 SS Help

SLIGHT grinding going into gear is fairly normal for these motors. ANY grinding once it's solidly in gear is no good.

O.K. Try this with the motor OFF!

Shift into froward at the controller. Go to the prop and spin it Clockwise. It should spin freely, but "ratchet" while it turns. IT should turn back CCW about 25-30 degrees then lock.

Shift to neutral at the controller and spin the prop. Should spin freely both directions. No ratcheting.

Shift to reverse at the controller. THe pro pshould only go 25-30 degrees EITHER direction then lock. If your reverse gear is fine, you should be able to actually turn the motor over by turning the prop. (BE CAREFUL, the prop is SHARPER than you think!!!!!) I used a rag to do it. If it will do that, the reverse gear is good. If it starts ratcheting or grinding or slipping, could have a problem.

P.S. I am assuming since you didn't say so that you haven't removed the lower unit yet! If you did and didn't post it, let me know! YOu may have fixed it and I didn't realize it. If you haven't removed it, did you get water out of your tell-tale while it was running??

Re: 1967 Merc 1100 SS Help

While in forward it spins clock wise and ratchets, if I turn it counter clock wise it will not spin.

While in neutral it spins freely both ways.

While in reverse it spins both ways with a little bit of a ratchet but not as much as it does in forward. Kinda like it is really slipping.

I have not taken the lower unit off yet and I have not got to put it in the water yet.

Re: 1967 Merc 1100 SS Help

But you ran it on muffs, should have gotten even just a little water out of the tell-tale...If you are unsure about the age of impeller, best to replace it before you run the motor much! It can shred and leave you with all kinds of issues more expensive than a $12 impeller! Not to mention the lower unit lube, you need to replace it and see what it looks like when you drain it. If you drain it and its got a lot of water, or if there are chunks or shavings of metal, you know you have problems....I know you want to see it run, but it's small maintenance for BIG peace of mind.

BTW- if no one has told you, don't run it over 2500 RPM on the muffs, that is not sufficient water supply for high RPM's.

Re: 1967 Merc 1100 SS Help

The guy changed the fluid in the lower end when I was there to see how it was. It looked very new so I'm not sure how old it was. I didn't run it hard with the muffs on there, just gave it a little up down on the rpms.

What do you mean by this? "should have gotten even just a little water out of the tell-tale"

I will replace the impeller as soon as I get my manual. I will call the shop tomorrow and order one.

Re: 1967 Merc 1100 SS Help

On the starboard side of your motor, toward the back, on the bottom cowling (the one that doesn't come off without removing some bolts) is a small tube. When your engine is running, water should be coming out of it to let you know your impeller is running properly. In addition, I ALWAYS run mine without the cowling on when I'm on muffs, b/c you can put your hand on the water jacket and feel whether or not water is circulating through the block. The #2 reason for death of OB motors is overheating. #1 is lack of lubrication from improper fuel mix/carbs or timing causing motor to run too lean. You should be running 50:1 fuel/oil mix in (preferrably) non ethanol gasoline (getting harder to find).

Re: 1967 Merc 1100 SS Help

Just looked at your pics again, should be starboard side just under that chrome handle on the back of your motor. If you had happened to taken a starboard side shot similar to that port side shot I would be able to see it.

Re: 1967 Merc 1100 SS Help

Ok, I will check that for water tomorrow.

I have a fresh tank of 50:1. Cant find non ethanol gasoline around here.

If there is no water coming out of the tell-tale then that tells me the impeller is shot....correct?

Cant wait for the manual to get here so I can start playing with it a bit more. I really want to get her in the water.

Re: 1967 Merc 1100 SS Help

Had some free time today. Put the muffs on and fired her up. It took a few minutes for the water to start coming out of the tell-tale but once it did it was flowing very well. I did notice when I put it into reverse and gave it a little throttle there was some grinding going on like there was some gears grinding as if they were not fully engaged. Any ideas before I put it in the water?

Re: 1967 Merc 1100 SS Help

Have you checked to see that your shift cable is properly adjusted?
1.)Remove cable from motor shift arm.
2.) Put shift arm in Neutral (should detent in this position)
3.) Place Controller in Neutral.
4.) adjust cable screw barrel so cable can be installed onto
shift arm with no force and easy alignment.
5.) check F-N-R without engine running. if ok then check with engine running.
