I recently purchased a 2005 Stingray 185 with 37 hours. The first time out she overheated at low rpms. I turned it off and let it cool down for about 20 minutes, started it up got going and it was fine the rest of the evening. The next morning took it out and she overheated again. Overheats while hooked up to the fresh water flush idoling in my driveway. Hopefully its just the thermostat. If not, whats my next step?

Re: Overheating 3.0 Volvo Penta

Look for bits of impeller in the water hose that comes up from the raw water pump on the front of the engine. Mine likes to move back slightly when turned off, bending back the corner of an impeller blade. This corner eventually breaks off. When I first got my 3.0, there were lots of these same pieces in the water hose. (Many more than were broken off the impeller). If you have not replaced the impeller, you should do this too (not hard on these volvos)

Re: Overheating 3.0 Volvo Penta

I have a 3.0L Volvo that was overheating last summer, usually after about 20 minutes at 3500 rpm cruising. This spring I replaced the raw water impeller, which the other guy mentioned, and I replaced the thermostat. The boat was perfect the first 3 times out, but now I seem to have a leak in my recirc pump and the boat overheated again this weekend.

My advice is, if you are in there replace all 3 maybe, raw water, recirc and thermostat.
