I have my Dad's 1969 Mercury outboard that we used on a jon boat. My Dad always told me that this model was the last Mercury that used all metal parts -- no plastic. I would like to know if that is true.

It was used to the mid 70's. Then it was stored on a stand since that time. There is a lake owned by the local water company which rents boats and motors but will allow you to use your own motor. I would like to use it to take my 4 year old grandson fishing but I need to know that the motor is reliable.

Therefore my second question is -- Should I have an outboard mechanic overhaul it due to its age, having not been used in 35 years, and last used leaded gas? Please keep in mind that I am not mechanical.

My ole man would be proud if I could use his motor.

Not to be a smart *****. what is you mechanical aptitude?
Those were nice motors. New water pump impellar, carb kit, change lower end lube.
The impellar, carb kit, will cost you approx. 60. +, if you can do it yourself.
You will need the serial number from the motor before you find anything.
that motor in good running condition is worth about 200. to 300.
so take it from there.
I hope that helps you.

I am not mechanically inclined. So I will need to have someone else do the work. What about the gas problem? Will I have to use lead substitute or will the carb kit allow the use of unleaded gas?
