Volvo AQ125B stalls when revved cold...

Hi-
I have a 1985 Bayliner Capri 1950 with a Volvo Penta AQ125B... with an I/O sterndrive. This was an unmaintained boat until I got my hands on it last year, and I'm working down a list of issues...

The problem I'm trying to address is mainly this: When starting cold, I can usually get it to turn over and catch to idle fairly quickly.
However, when I try to give it gas, either in neutral or in gear, it stalls out. THis will continue until the engine is pretty warmed up, then it will run smoothly and normally.

The only other symptom is occaisional run on, after I've taken the key out.

Here's what I've done recently (although the problem existed the whole time I've had the boat):
New distrib cap
new rotor
new plugs
new points
new coil (don't leave the key in the on position for a week.)

Is this maybe a carb problem???? I don't want to steer the answer, just feels like a carb problem to this non-expert...

Any thoughts welcome. THanks

Is the choke working correctly ?

Re: Volvo AQ125B stalls when revved cold...

The only carb diagnosis I've done is that I can see it shooting fuel when the throttle is revved..

I've seen the manual describing how to rebuild the carb, but I haven't seen a method for diagnosing the choke... Is the procedure available anywhere?

Thanks... I'm not real good with carbs...

If your not really sure about carby's the best thing is to remove it and get it rebuilt. saves all the hassles and you know that all issues are solved.

And when you refit it change the fuel filter as well.

My 125a does the same untill its good and warmed up. I think there jus cold blooded. The run on may be a timing problem.

This is the correct answer, they are cold blooded, and have NO choke. There is no fix to this.

And yes, run on can be caused from the timing being off.

You said you replaced the points, did you set the dwell angle with a dwell meter following the points install? Once you have the dwell set, then set your timing since the dwell (aka points adjustment) will effect the timing. Let us know if you need further help.:)

BTW, when you start your boat, don't be afraid to idle it up around 1800-2000 RPM in nuetral for a couple minutes to warm it up before heading out.;)

Thanks- I'm off to get a dwell meter. I do have a timing light so that should be set after that.

Does anyone have a source for used Solex carbs? I'd love to get my hands on one and rebuild it, but still have a safe fallback. Anyone have a guess how much a professional rebuild would be? Seems like a relatively simple carb, but not sure how I'd find a shop..

Thanks very much for all the comments.

Carbs are on ebay all the time 50 to $100. Probably won't find an OEM kit but there are Sierra and other brands out there.

I have the same problem with my AQ but it didn't used to do it. last season I sprayed some copper coat around the intake and head mating surface while it was running. This helped for a little while. Before I go out this season I will replace the leaking intake manifold gasket.

Set the dwell up around 63-65.

here's the rebuild kit for the carb. The carb is basic. if you'd rather pay someone to do it, I would think you could get it cleaned and for less than 100 dollars labor.

Adjust the points and the timing and give it another test before doing the carb. I think its a good idea to test between repairs to see how it affects the boat.:)

Let us know how it goes.
