55 merc mark 25 stuck in reverse...

Newbie here. Got an old 1955 Murcury Mark 25 outboard that is stuck in reverse, and wont shift 2 nuetral or forward. Anyone know the cause for this??? hasnt run in about 15 years. Just changed the Impelor, lower unit Grease, and spark plugs. Its fired up after a few pulls, until it got suck in reverse. Any help would greatly be appriciated. Im stumped.

Chances are when you had the lower unit off you didn't get the splines realigned correctly between the upper and lower shift shafts. Drop the unit again, put BOTH shafts in neutral and try again. And again. And again.... You'll get it eventually...

Ain't old Mercs fun???
