purchased my '86 2850 bayliner (350/280vp) at the end of last year. NO problems. enjoyed it 3 or 4 times. then hung it up for the winter....

TODAY... had marine change oil and lube. THEN got the phone call I did not want to hear...

"water in oil"

WOW- not sure what to do. Have been reading on here all night. Could be several different things. I know I am going to get spit at for this... changing marinas (bc current marina is not a volvo mechanic). Had them oil n lube and put boat in water. Going to take my chance with the very short trip to new marina- where they are known for their volvo work. HATE to do it....

my "old" marina quoted me over $1200 to have "seals" changed... that correct??? will be calling new marina tomorrow to see what their price is...

just joined this forum. MUCH more info posted about 280's... good reads. Just a real bad day... not sure if I will be able to enjoy the season. do not have that kind of money... DARNNNNN

Boats are expensive.
It's a 24 year old boat.
Marine part prices are expensive to... but Volvo parts can be astronimical.
Sure I can see 1200 bucks in resealing a 280 drive... but that's just for starters, hope they don't find anything else along the way.
Welcome to boating...

Did they pressure test the drive to find out where the leak is or are they just "guessing" that it needs a complete reseal? Quite often people try to re-use the o-rings on the drain screws which will then allow water intrusion this is a simple fix compared to a re-seal about $1 plus labor.

So is there water in the engine oil or water in the outdrive lube? Since your referring to a "280" I assume your talking about your Volvo outdrive?

Water in the outdrive lube could be anything from the drain plug gasket not sealing to a prop shaft seal, etc... In my mind, $1200 part's and labor seems a bit steep... But I have no idea what seals they are changing exactly...

Calm down, don't call it a season killer yet...

Re: sad start to season....

Thanks for the "calming" words. Not sure what "seals". Sounded like it was just water in oil... So just the lower unit?? not sure. I will get more answers after this week. I know things are expensive. Just frustrated.... we will see!!!

thanx again.

no, not pressure tested. want to get boat to new marina. it sounds "common"- water in oil... not good common, but something that happens....

Re: sad start to season....

Got my boat to the new marina. Fresh lube and oil in VP280 (done by old marina). 25 minute drive to new marine. Set my lines and all was good- until I opened the engine hatch... Oil- everywhere... BUT NOT engine oil...

Oil from I/O... asked a few people on other forums. They say this is very highly unlikely, but possible... others explains... what are all your opinions. Will be having new marina look at it...

No. engine oil is fine. there was a good bit of oil in the engine compartment. Going to make the call to the marina... see what they say...

Re: sad start to season....

The oil from the outdrive couldn't be in the bilge.

could be power steering fluid.

Sound like you're at the mercy of the new marina.

Have the outdrive pressure checked.

Good luck...
