Hello everyone. First post here. I took out my Ski Centurion a little while ago and the Indmar 302 kept overheating. I looked around and noticed it was pouring water out from between the block and the trans. I took the trans off and saw this:

Can this be repaired with a plate and a little welding, or am I looking at a new block? Thanks!

That's what I thought. It was given to me by my uncle. I don't think he ever winterized it...

Can I use any Ford 302 block or are the marine and auto blocks different?

You could weld it if you were stranded in the Mad Max desert wasteland, but domestic smallblock v8s are cheap and awesome in America.

Props for the wickedly sized hole.

I'm doing the same thing right now. Welding it can be done but with damage like that I wouldn't do it. You have many options. What I did was go to a junkyard and bought a whole engine, 350 chevy, that ran. I stripped it down to rotating assembly. Crank rods pistons. All other parts I'm reusing. I will have around 500 in total cost. If u can find just a 302 block u need to check the bores. A standard bore 302 would fix ur problem. Or a short block assembly.

You would be totally wasting your time trying to fix that.Trash it and get a new block or short block. Cast iron doesn't weld well and anything else wouldn't be dependable. It's already out fix it once the right way and be done with it. Those blocks are cheap and readily available.

Nice! In 24+yrs of working on boats, I have never seen a Ford small block break there.

Glade I could show you guys something new, lol. The piece wasn't there when I took the trans off. Oh well. I need a new project to do so I actually got a little excited when I heard I need a whole new block...

Re: big hole in block repairable?

I have fixed blocks by welding them
you have to use stainless steel rod
to do it cold you have to stitch weld - very short passes
to do it hot you need to pre heat and post heat

then you don't know where else the block could be cracked
nature loves to give surprises

get another block
