I have a question regarding the outdrive I can use to mate up with my 1972 Mercruiser 888 (Ford 302). My boat is configured to run Ford and I already rebuilt the engine so I don't want to switch to Chevy. I talked to a shop that said a complete outdrive package to fit the 302 would be $1500+. One shop said I need the "R" style outdrive and another one said I need the #1 drive (I think that was the name). Can anyone help me figure out my options? What kind of outdrives will mate up to the mercruiser 888? Thank you.

Re: Mercruiser 888 (Ford 302) OUTDRIVE QUESTION

a '72 888 came with a mc-1 drive.

the mc-1 drive is basically the same drive as

mc-1
1r (mc-1 revised)
1mr (mc-2 major revised)
alpha1

so any of the above should fit.

have ya checked with sei. http://www.sterndrive.cc/faq.htm
these drives are also sold through iboats..

Ayuh,... I take it you have the motor,..?? a 302 was known as the 188, as in it's hp...
The outdrives used on the Fords were known as the 888s, which as stated by Ziggy, are the Same as many other named drives...
Do you have the Transom Assembley in the boat,..?? That's what has to be Matched to...

Re: Mercruiser 888 (Ford 302) OUTDRIVE QUESTION

Oh ok. I knew the Ford 302 was 188hp but I was under the impression that the Ford 302 was the same thing as the Mercruiser model 888. I didn't know that the 888 referred to the outdrive. Learn something new every day...well, two new things today.
