When winterizing my boat i was pulling the hoses off the engine while my dad was draining water out of the drive.. he pulled a plug out that he shouldn't have and i do not know what it is .. it is not in the manual or any diagrams.
The bolt he took out is threaded but the hole is not .. we removed water pump and can not seem to find out what was holding it in .. .. No oil or anything in hole... took it to repair shop they could not help .. here is pictures
Thanks in advance!

Ayuh,... That's OMC's Evil, Never remove it screw.... It don't do much, but hold back water...
Unfortunately,...
Now you have to drop the lower unit, find the backer nut, Reinstall it..
Then put the lower unit back on....

No,.. You can't run without it, the water going to the motor Won't get there...

Once you get it back together,...
I'd suggest you stake it in place with a punch, then cover it with Epoxy...
That'll save somebody the Hassle you're going through...

Now is the perfect time to grease the u-joints,inspect the gimbal bearing and replaced the bellows if they have not been done in the last 3 to 5 years.
The drive is supposed to be removed yearly and serviced anyway.

OMC used to put a Cobra decal over that screw so this would not happen.

you should start a new thread for this question.

won't affect cooling if it came right out.

If it's stuck in the downpipe, it will affect cooling and power.

you can run without but there may be additional risk of hydrolocking the engine. depends on hull design so the risk can't really be evaluated except by trial and error.
I know there's a lot of boats running around without them. But locking an engine can destroy it.
