I am waiting for the adapter assembly to come in converting my prior to 1996 OMC control harness to newer than 1996 engine which has the 3 plugs instead of the one big red one. But, in the meantime, I am wondering if I am going to have a problem because I pre-mix my fuel oil and do not have an oil reservoir for the (i guess) engine system check wires. Is the engine not going to start if I dont have those wires completing a circuit? If so, is there a combination of wiring I can do to by pass all that stuff? I think it is 3 wires. Thanks for the help. And oh! I got promoted to apprentice seaman!!! Is that a pay raise??? LOL Oh, model number is a J90PLSI

No, None of the sensors of the Systems Check will prevent the motor from starting.

The OMS oil mixing system on that motor is very reliable, and the system check sensors are very good. Why did you revert to premixed fuel?

Re: Wiring question for a 2001 90hp Johnson

I went with pre-mix for a few reasons. The biggest reason is my boat is not equipped with an external oil reservoir so cost-wise, I just figured to leave what i am used to. Second reason, the guy I bought the motor from said he had difficulty getting the motor to start due to HIS reservoir having a hole in it and the low oil sensor killing spark (which i figured was wrong). So I just converted the 3 plug harness found on these newer than '96 motors to my older than "96 OMC contols harness. It left me 3 wires unaccounted for which are brown and yellow, brown and black and I think off the top of my head, another brown and something that I guess is the wires for the idiot-light leads. I did post another issue yesterday which someone here is helping me with. I think i have a power pack going bad, but cant be sure without further testing. I did plug and play as told to earlier and she fired right up. The only thing I did was cap the oil injection port with an OMC rubber plug and a hose clamp. All the wires going to the VRO are inplace incase someday, someone might buy the boat and wants to use the Oil System.

The System Check wires on the motor are tan and another color tracer(orange, blue..). Black is usually ground. I do not remember the function of the brown and yellow or brown wires.

weird thing is, the seloc manual i have doesn't even show those wires exist, but they definetly come from the engines 3 plug wire harness.

The eight wire SystemCheck plug has tan and yellow and tan and black wires for the oil tank warnings. Click the thumbnail for the diagram.

You should not have any wires left, except the VRO connection, and the oil tank connection. Threre are 3 connectors 1 with 3 wires, 1 with 5 wires, and 1 with 6 wires. These wires would go farward to the controls and panel. The 3 sensors overheat, low oil, and no oil wires are in the 5 wire connector. Overheat , tan, low oil tan/black stripe, no oil tan/yellow stripe, gray tach signal, and a black ground wire. I may get the complete diagram up tomorrow.

........ So I just converted the 3 plug harness found on these newer than '96 motors to my older than "96 OMC contols harness. doesnt the adapter just fit in between the motor harness and the controls harness????

if so...which I think I am right about...the adapter harness is back at the motor end..

is that correct?

does your harness connect all the pigtail ends of the motors harness, matching each one up to a mate and then terminates in a big red plug....which you just connect to the big red plug coming from the controls??

or does your harness connect into your motors pigtails and then run all the way to the controls, and then just plugs right into the control itself?

and you completely remove the harness that was with the older control??

I have an "adapter" that goes the other way!! post 96 controls with pre 96 motor...and the dammmm adapter is 20 foot long itself...and right now i have it looped up back at the engine...i think this weekend, i am splicing that sucker down.....an ideal adapter would have been maybe 6 " long....because the harness I have fit from control to motor already( previous motor was post 96 to match controls)

Just to increase my post count. I do not use these harness adapters. I like the harness to fit the engine, the reconnect to control box. Sometimes I cut and splice using marine grade butt connectors.

You still want wiring diagram, keep bumping post to top.

Re: Wiring question for a 2001 90hp Johnson

I didnt spend the 180 dollars for the newer than '96 motor to older than '96 control harness adapter, but yes, the adapter harness plugs into the 3 plugs on the motor and terminates into the red plug on the older controls. But that would still leave me extra wires due to the onboard motor diagnostic indicators (idiot-lights). Or I could of bought a tach with the idiot lights in it for another $$$.$$ ??? I simply took the old red adapter off my parts motor and cut the wires, matched up color to color going back to the engine (the engine came with the controls wiring already attached, that could of run all the way up to the controls). o I made my own adapter. Wasnt hard, red to red, black to black, it wasn't bad. Fired right up! But I am thinking I have a finicky power pack.
