OK, I have foreign cars, a harley, tractor equipment and now a mercruiser engine, everybody says to use their specific type grease, how many grease guns or tubes can a guy have??? Is there any one grease that can meet all the different types of requirements? I suppose it needs High RPM, high heat, high bearing load and water resistant to name a few properties.thanks

Re: Grease questions

I use the green Marine Grease on the boat, motor, wheel bearings, car chasis, etc., just about everything, no problems. This grease is rather sticky, green, soft, very waterproof, not prone to getting hard, recommended on the tube for boat trailer wheel bearings, about $4/tube at Auto Zone, pretty hard to beat! Good Luck

Hidden in the humor, was an answer of sorts. Basically Bond-o's creed "Any grease is better than no grease!"

I use this stuff on just about everything.

Re: Grease questions

Can't some greases actually be bad for some applications? I know natural grease is clay based and not really an ideal product. Perhaps a synthetic grease may be too high viscous or tacky to use in a steering head bearing? I don't know thats why i'm asking.

Re: Grease questions

Outboard Motors (I/Os as well) have bushings and ball bearings that need grease for anti-friction purposes. and areas that need grease for anti-rust reasons. Multipurpose Grease is suitable for all of these uses. Wheel Bearing Grease is overkill, but suitable for bushings and bass bearings. Therefore a single wheel bearing grease is suitable for nearly all marine needs. I use Boat Trailer wheel bearing grease for most everything. It is salt water resistant and made for wheel bearings. It therefore exceeds any need I have.

There is one special purpose grease that has some advantage. It is made for stainless steel steering rods for Outboard steering cables and I/Os. It is Merc Special Lube 101. OMC likely has something similar. It is a bit better for steering cables, since it lasts longer. It is not suitable for bearings however.

Re: Grease questions

Thanks Chris,
You hit the nail right on the head, one reason I asked was I noticed the grease for the power steering rod was a very tacky and dark black grease I had not seen before and your answer about the 101 was right on.
But according to others on this thread I could have used any grease for the s/s rods and special grease 101 on the bearings???
