Transom Saver on I/O boats?

Okay bought this my first boat last August. I notice all these OB motor folks have this metal bar deal that fits between the motor and the trailer and adds support to the motor for trailer traveling. Appears to take the pressure off the transom, and maybe the hydraulic trim rams or the sort. My I/O boat didnt have one.

Do I/O's normally have them and are they needed for my type of boat too?

Not needed. They do make a product (and I have heard of folks making them from pvc pipe too) that are like "clips" that clip over the extended rams and that way if they fail the stern drive doesn't lower. I myself just hook a tie down on the stern-drive and hook it over the ski eye. It isn't taking any weight but if hydraulics fail it would hold it up.

(Do a search on Iboats marine store under trailer clips and they have a pic of them).

I/O's DO need them. Its not cause we're afraid the drive will fall down, its to take the stress off the cylinders when the boat is bounching down the highway.

You're right . I/O's don't normally have them. Owners don't normally read the owners manual either.

Only costs a couplabucks.

those cylinders are not even slightly stressed driving down the road.... they hold the full thrust generated by the engine while running

Um yeah, I would say that is quite a bit more pressure then they would ever see driving down the road. So no, I don't use one on mine, heck I didn't on my O/B either...but I probably should have.

Someone once posted pictures of his Volvo outdrive that had sprung a hydraulic leak while he was towing...the lower unit had dropped to full down, and was trashed.

I went to West Marine and picked up a set of the Quicksilver snap-on retainers...just one more thing to not have to worry about, or slap yourself in the forehead saying 'I could have had a V-8 (vegetable juice)'!

I use the clip on ones as well. I don't want a hydraulic leak cause me to ruin my expensive Volvo Duo prop drive.

yeah don't get me wrong... not a horrible thing to have but just not to save transom or keep cylinders from being stressed...
for me though there would be no use my drives don't get anywhere near the road even fully down....

BTW you can make a cheap one yourself by cutting a strip out of a peice of pvc so that it snaps on the ram

If I'm going a long way, I loop a rope around the drive and cleat it off, just in case.

Jokes on you guys, get a pre-alpha drive and you have a factory top cap which has an eye for a drive hook that connects to the gimbal ring. Wonder why they lost that design aspect?

Because it would either break the top of the drive or the gimbal housing.

Why would it break? Semms to have lasted on most of the ones I've seen. Maybe just years of fatigue combined with that pot metal the use for the housing.

That is where I am stuck....which one works for the Volvo SX drives. All I see is Merc and OMC.

Mine is old school, and people comment on it all the time. I'll snap a pic at home, but it looks sort of like a metal divining rod. It has two "hooks" that hook around where the rams attach, and the other end goes into the hole on the top gimble. Would only work on Alpha 1 gen 1's from what I hear.

I found some pics, not the greatest though.
Look on the left side of my swim platform,

And here you can see it behind my weedsprayer, that I turned into a drive filler.

My alpha has a cool little hook that goes from the top of the drive to the transom plate. You just go all the way up and then install the hook, and then just lower it down till it catches.

I snapped some better pics as I was messing with the boat today.

Here's the hook,

Of course, you can see scratches from it on my transom.
