Ok I bought this engine used and did a compression test and it checked out great. All cylinders have almost the same compression. I was told this motor was not used very often and has very very low hours. Ok they always say that but it looks great and the orginal spark plugs show very little wear on them.

My question is this. I have not run the engine yet other than the guy ran it on a hose before I bought it. He says it has been sitting in his yard for about 5 years not used other than he did start it up occasionaly. It started right up for me when I went to look at it.

Now what should I do to get this motor ready for a season of boating?

Thanks for your input

There is a "Waking a sleeping OB" thread in the FAQ section of this forum.

Re: Johnny 150 hp 1996 Ocean Runner.

Working on the Oil Tank and drained all the old 2 stroke oil. At the bottom of the tank it was milky andI took it apart to check the hoses. A little stiff but they seem fine. The tank has a pretty long hose and a long wire that lead to the motor. Is there any issue with shortning the hose and wire. This tank will sit right under the splash well and I will only need about 6 feet of hose and wire. I assume that shorter is better?

The other is I am going to clean up the tank with a little gasolene and swirl it around to make sure I get all the old moisture and oil out before adding fresh oil. I want to be sure everything is clean and working properly.

The old feed hose looks to be ok just a little stiff. I replaced the prime bulb with a new one. Should I replace the hose if it looks ok?

I replaced the fuel hose to the engine. The prime bulb now is in the splash well near the motor. It use to sit near the tank. Does it matter where in the line the prime bulb is placed?

I am just dont want to make a dumb mistake so I thought I would ask my dumb questions first.

Thanks for the responces.

Re: Johnny 150 hp 1996 Ocean Runner.

There is a drain screw in the bowl of each carb. Would it be a good or bad idea to remove it and spray some carb cleaner in there before firing her up for the season? I thought it might break down any of the varnish that might be hanging inside there? I am also going to install a glass filter right before the carbs. I think it would be a quick check to see if you have gas up to the carbs in the future?

I assume I need to remove the oil hose and pump fresh oil right up to the VRO pump for the first fire up of the season? Yes I will use mixed fuel for the first tank till I know the oil pump is working ok. I was going to install new plugs but I think I will wait till I am sure everything is working ok since I know I will be running twice the oil for a bit to make sure everything is working ok and then put in fresh plugs. I already checked the old plugs they dont look bad and are not fowled.

I had a mechanic that I was going to have hiim change the water pump but I am thinking of doing it myself so I know how to do it in the future. I have a book on it and it doesnt look too hard. I did it once on the old 115 mercury. Do I leave the engine in gear forward or reverse before I remove the lower unit?

Thanks for the advise wise ones. :)

The smart money is on a factory service manual , not seloc or clymer.
www.outboardbooks.com

VRO oil feed line must be purged of air, run engine on premixed gas/oil until you see its definately drawing oil level down inthe vro tank.
Use clamps on all connectors.

I would rebuild all the carbs and do the water pump for sure.
All it takes is one lean run to melt a piston.
Order carb kits here on iBoats, ez DIY project.

Change lower gear oil, order new seals here for drain screws.

Remove prop, check shaft for fishing line, use stainless cotter pin, new.

Install a water seperator.
Avoid extra fuel filters that might impede fuel draw, they really need to drink freely.

Re: Johnny 150 hp 1996 Ocean Runner.

Thanks for the advise and help. Now I have fresh fuel and fresh oil and new fuel filter / seperator installed. Changed the oil in the lower unit. Looks great no milky stuff all dark oil. No fishing line on the prop. Carb kits will be ordered soon. I am glad to hear its a fairly easy DIY installation on them.

Now when I changed the water pump with a new kit. I changed all the old o rings and gaskets. Reading the instrustions they said to make sure you install the new water tube grommet ? hmmmmm never saw an old water tube grommet ? Where does it go? so I installed it in the water tube. Everytime I tried to install the lower unit the grommet folded over inside the tube. I greesed it still same problem. I removed it form the water pump and tried and realized it has to be pushed almost to the bottom of the tube to fit properly and not fold over when I install the lower unit. Once the unit is installed there is no way of knowing if the grommet is postioned properly I assume you have to just test water flow and have some faith?

Now I am also worried what happened to the old grommet that was not there? Is it up inside the engine someplace? If so how do you know and what do you do about it? I assume the water tell tale will tell the story if everything is ok?

I am tying to gain experience from asking question here before I make the dumb mistakes.

Thanks for your feedback
