Anyone identify this outboard

Hello!
I'm new to the forum and have a High Tide fiberglass fishing boat with an outboard. I've done some work on the boat itself and have got it in fairly nice shape but I haven't begun to tackle the outboard yet. I want to pick up some repair manuals so I can dig into it and try and get it running, however I have no clue what the manufacturer is nor what size engine it is. The PO painted a camo pattern into it and covered up all markings. I pulled the cover to the outboard and looked around for an obvious label or tag which would suggest a brand name, but I couldn't find one. Tomorrow I'll dig into it further and try to find a serial or some sort of marking, but in the meantime does anyone have any idea what kind / size it is based on these pictures? I know its a long shot and unlikely that it can be identified based on these pics, but I'm hoping there is something particular about the engine that can be spotted and will identify it.

Thanks!

Shaped alot like my Johnson. The cover & the piece that holds it to the transom. One the bolts on the head should have a model or serial # on it. Model # I think?

Look for a plate on the port side of the transom bracket....or a silver plug about the size of a quarter that has some numbers on it.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll pull the cover tomorrow and take a better look around. I just had one of those "gotta know right now" moments!

Re: Anyone identify this outboard

Hey all, the search continues as to what type of outboard this is. I was able to dig up some numbers (looked all over the engine, under flywheel, etc) and based on a few google searches, it is indeed a Johnson / Evinrude, but I don't know what size or model # it is. Possibly a 40 hp?

I found the following numbers in the following locations:

1) Stamps on the carb - 398347 and 398340
2) Stamped on the head - 333543
3) Stamped near the engine lift bracket - 334207

I looked on the side of the transom mount and although I could see where the label was, it is completely destroyed except for serial # 029720 but there are likely more numbers either before or after that.

Here are some pictures - I'd like to figure out what year and size so I can buy a manual and determine how to use it and why it won't start.

Also, once it is determined what kind of engine it is, what it would be worth to someone assuming that it runs? I'm considering taking it to a shop for them to troubleshoot and repair and would want to be sure before I did so that I'm not dropping a couple hundred bucks to repair an engine that is worth squat to begin with.

Thanks all!

40 or 50 hp OMC Possibly Johnson , white paint on inside. Was this thing under water?

I don't think so, why? Because of the rust on the fly wheel? The "rust" look in the last picture is misleading. It's just the way the light is hitting it.

Those part numbers tell me that it's an OMC engine for sure. The biggest difference between Johnson and Evinrude was the paint and decals (and the model #). After looking at your pictures, I am pretty certain you have a Johnson. The white paint suggests that since Evinrudes were typically painted blue.

A mid 70's 40HP is worth about $250-750 around here, depending on the condition. Taking it to a shop will cost probably $500, just because they can.

Do you really think it won't run now?

Go over to the repair side of the forum and read the 'top secret files' at the top of the forum. There is a thread on reviving an outboard that has slept a few years that will walk you thru all the checks and procedures you need to get it running yourself. It is actually pretty relaxing and easy work if you enjoy that sort of thing. You posted GREAT pictures, so I am sure that any issues you had, the guys will walk you thru the correct solution in great detail. Doing it yourself, you can replace everything that is 'normally serviceable' and do it for under $200.

It's a 1990 or so Johnrude 40hp. The carb numbers are from a 40hp.

Were you able to locate the silver plug on the top pof the engine toward the spark plugs??? Take a look for it. It should have the model and serial stamped into it!!!

I looked all over and couldn't find it! I don't know if someone removed it or not. I feel pretty confident though that it is indeed a Johnson 40 hp per the above posts.

Thanks to all for the assistance!

Re: Anyone identify this outboard

I agree with the 40hp Johnson opinion. The angled section on the front of the hood, plus the interior paint color are a couple of key "give-aways," not to mention the look of the powerhead, fuel pump, etc.

Also, this is not a '70s motor - its much newer. I looked this model up for someone a while ago, but forget the year range. That said, I would start looking in about the late '80s.
