I have a 19' Bayliner Capri Cuddy and the spec is for up to a 125 HP motor. Well, mine siezed and am looking at a 130 HP. I live in South Carolina and was wonderng if this is really anything to worry about?
There have been hundreds of discussions both here and elsewhere on this particular situation. It's basically between you and your insurance company. There could also be implications if you are involved in an accident on the water.
I had a 17ft checkmate that was 125hP rated and Had a 140 on it. DNR never mentioned it when we were checked a few times. That being said your insurance company might have something to say if you are ever envolved in an accident on the water. I would check with the insurance company. Mine always ask what the HP is when insuring a boat. I don't think 5HP is something to worry about as far as the boat is concerned.
Make sure your transom is in excellent shape. If the original motor was a Force, you may find that going to even a similarly rated motor from another manufacturer is more powerful.
I'm assuming it is a used motor. If the weight is similar to a 125, could you have it de-tuned or re-jetted to 125 hp and certified as such by a registered shop, in order to appease any insurance company?
