are you subscribed too?

Go to "User CP" then under "Subscribed Threads" click on "List Subscriptions" and over on the right it will show how many you are subscribed to.
I just hit 870. I'm sure it depends on how you have your profile setup though.

No idea either, but my total is zero; so I guess as OP says, it's something for which you have to opt-in via the profile maintenance page.

Yep, I have it set to when I reply, I am subscribed. I also subscribe without replying to topics that interest me.

Makes it easy to find stuff, you just check the threads you are subscribed to, and don't have to search.
