Not a mention of what engine, outdrive, manufacturer, or year or anything to tell us what you are working on, but you want to know what the problem is.

Well, it's a bad bearing, probably, or maybe, or it could be something else.

Re: engine growling

Did you align the engine? If not I hope you did not do too much damage to the coupler. They are $200+ and drive and engine removal to replace.

Re: engine growling

If this is an Alpha drive, you could easily pull the outdrive off...BRIEFLY run the engine...and see if the noise has gone away.

If the noise disappears, then you will know that it could be the alignment, or a gimbal bearing, or a u-joint, or....

Re: engine growling

Until he tells us what he's working on, everyone is just taking a bunch of WAG's based on hopes.

I mean, giving prices for parts and what it takes to do it, when you don't even know what he has. COME ON !!!!!

Wait for his reply with what he has, then make your comments instead of cluttering the post with Merc info if he has an OMC stringer, or a Volvo or ...........

Re: engine growling

Pull the outdrive, check the alignment, and check for water in the bellows, and/or rust on the ujoints & gimbal bearing.
You may have also damage the coupler if you raised the engine too high for too long. with the drive still on while you fixed the stringers.

Re: engine growling

Did you check everything before and when you put it back?

Please understand, We weren't there, so have no idea what you have or have not done, or what you have done if it was done correctly or not.

Why would you replace the gimbal bearing if it is not bad or if it's not the problem.
Sounds like you want to be a "Throw parts at it till it works" type of guy then complain about the cost.
Start looking for the problem, not just a couple possibilities on a forum. Pull the drive, look for water, turn the gimbal bearing by hand, if it's perfectly smooth it's NOT your problem. Check the ujoints, alignment, all that stuff. BEFORE you order parts.
Order what you need, not what is suggested as a Possible cause of your growling noise.
