Hello All
Being so close to the season I decided to fire up my 87 mercruiser 3.0 w/ alpha one out drive
It took a bit to get her going and when she fired up I tried to put her into gear the engine would throttle up but no shifting. Usual I get a bit of a clunk when it shifts but nothing today just revs the engine, and when i try reverse the engine stalls.
Could this be a serious drive problem?
thank you for any help.

Ayuh,... More than likely, it's the Lower Shift Cable.....
Serious enough it Needs fixin', but not the End of the world....

Sounds like you too have a lower shift cable problem.
A cable with cracked rubber coating that gets rusty and sets all winter usually binds and needs replaced. Happens all the time.

Howdy,

well it could be......but it's more likely a shifter or lower shift cable issue.

If you haven't already, you should go up to the top of the forun and look at the "Stickies" for the manual and other info there.

Also, with the engine off and the key in your hand, have someone slowly move the shifter into FWD while you turn the prop backwards.....and again into REV while you turn the prop forward.

See if the prop stops when shifter goes into either gear.

(if you turn the prop the "right" way, there should be a clicking noise")

Just went back out looks like my lower gear drive is shot i pulled lightly on my prop and entire shaft comes out 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch. Im looking at my pdf manual an what i thisnk is comming out is the bearing retainer nut? Does this sound right sorry im far from a boat mechanic so I don't think i have the proper terminology here is a pic.

May be able to replace just the lower but with that much water I`ll bet the upper is quite rusted inside too.did you change the drive oil when you winterized it?

Re: drive problems I think?

It`s sitting in possably a SEI shipping crate saying the upper splines are damaged. That can ONLY happen from a severe bottom strike leaving the gearset and bearings questionable.
I`d avoid that one.
What you need is to go to the "Adults section" and get the manual .download it and start reading
