I am looking at buying a fiberglass boat on a trailer, just to get the outboard.

the guy says the registration for the boat and trailer are current, and he has title to both.

I would just try and flip the boat and or boat and trailer....

the boat is in NJ and I live in NY

when i buy the rig, Ill will get the what ever paperwork he has and a bill of sale..

id prefer NOT to have to register the boat and trailer....just to be able to sell it.

what issues will i have if i just tried to convey the boat and trailer to a third party???

the info would have the original owners name and address....

can I pass it on??

should I leave info blank?? seems like i would be at risk kinda....if i had a signed title with out my name on it!!

anyway...if someone knows any details about trying to do what I am thinking , please reply..

I can flatbed the whole rig home...so i dont need to go get any temp plates

besides I bought sports car in NJ and they gave me a temp plates. but I had to spend two hours at the NJ DMV. before i could drive it home

dont want to deal with DMV in NJ

Re: another title question

legally you are not the owner until the title is transferred and registered. suggest you check with NY, as to the regs.

Re: another title question

I wouldn't register it if you aren't going to use it.

I bought one this summer for the motor and when we sat down at the kitchen table to do the paperwork, the title was still in the previous owner';s name--8 years ago! But he was a friend so we called him on the phone and he agreed if we needed to have him sign anything he would. So I just took the old title, same with the trailer.

I took it all to a used boat yard and had them pull the motor off that one and put on my boat. That boat yard then bought the boat and trailer from me (and my dead motor from my boat) so I just handed it all over to them. They deal in used boats so it wasn't a problem for them.

This was a 1987 Johnson 70. I bought the boat motor trailer for $900, sold the boat and trailer for $500 and the dead motor for $100. And I kept a fish finder, life preservers, ski line and vests, anchor etc etc it was like a rolling yard sale! So I'm glad I didn't have to deal with taxes and fees on a boat title and trailer title.

Different story entirely if you are going to use it. I only test ran it (he gave me a "bring back tomorrow" warranty).

Re: another title question

I live in NY and did the same thing 3 years ago.

First of all, older boats don't need to be titled in NY. The 2009 I bought last year WAS titiled.

Be sure that there is a clean chain of ownership. The NJ papers need to reflect that it was transfererred to you. Either by a bill of sale or formal title transfer. Then, you will write up a bill of sale to the next owner.

When the guy you sell it to goes to register it, they will give him a "Non-transferrable" registration and new NY numbers. Basically, at that point he's stuck with the boat and can't sell it. All the papers will be sent to Albany to have the title or ownership researched with NJ. That takes 3 or 4 months. Then they will send the new owner an upgraded registration that is transferrable.
