Need year for 40hp Mariner Ive looked everywhere

I search all the websites listed on here and tried all the different combinations of numbers I know to try and still cant figure out the year for my motor.
The plate reads:
Mariner 40E
6E9 L 409471
Made in Japan

Thank you so much. Do you mind me asking how you figured that out? Makes sense considering the boat is also an 82. I thought it might have been newer because it is in much better shape that the boat. I can start buying parts and a manual now and post more questions..

You'll get more results buying parts and manuals, and asking questions here if you use the serial number, not the year.
