serial number on lower unit???

got a 73 merc 888, with original upper. PO changed out the lower unit with what i belive to be a MR or an Alpha (based on the info i got from reading the sticky thread about merc hitory and identification.

does the lower unit have it's own serial # on it somewhere to help confirm what it is?

ya can kinda id it between the versions (mc-1 thru alpha 1)..
