New here, I own a 1993 Johnson 88 SPL. I have an oil leak on the lower unit. I leaks from the prop end and also if the outboard is trimmed up it will drip from the front end where the lower and upper meet. Is this a gasket/seal problem or more serious than that?

Thanks!

check your gear case oil and make sure there is no water in it, and that it is not low...good thing to change it every year or 2 anyway.

I got a new 2 stroke with the same symptom. I have not ran it yet and there wasn't very much oil in the lower unit. I do not have a pressure tester. Is there a way to make one? Also, can I just set that lower unit in a trash can for a day and then pull the plugs to drain it checking for water or should the prop be turning for water to bypass a seal?

Change every year before winter sets in if you live anywhere that freezes. If there is water in there it could well crack your casing.

Tell us what you have and explain a little more about "not much oil" What did the oil look like when you drained it and how much came out compared to the capacity of your motor ??
