Hi, I have just joined this forum, so pleased to be here. an incredible site & forum.

I am just wondering if anyone out there has upgraded the stator on their johnson outboard. I have a 75hp johnson 3 cyl. 1979. (75ELR79R).
The OEM stator (part no. - 581957) kicks out a measly 6amps.
The highest amperage stator I can find is the CDI 173-3724 (rated at 9amps)
However i was hoping to find one that kicks out at least 20amps. Has anyone any suggestions on a more powerful stator which would be compatible with this outboard?

Unless some third party has come out with something, the 9amp stator would be the top of the line. Curious...... why would you require a 20 amp stator?

Re: Heavy duty stator replacement ??

how did you guess bktheking & tx1961whaler. Im actually running 2x 500 watt amps. Also I have a 900w inverter for powering my lcd screen and laptop, not to mention lights(all led), fish finder and bilge pump etc. I have 2x 110ah marine batteries powering all this wich lasts me at least a full day although i would have liked a more heavy duty charging system so as to not have to charge my batteries so often. I currently have the 6amp stator installed so I'll just upgrade to the 9amp I think. At least it will be a bit better. Thanks for all your replys so far.

Is that an option for this engine. You'll have to upgrade the rectifier as well wont you? Normally that would mean a 9amp water cooled rectifier/regulator wouldn't it. I dont think there is a place to mount a water cooled regulator is there?

I think you need a portable generator or a boat with a whacking great inboard engine engine (twin alternators ) and a good battery charging system.

I'd definitely go with the upgrade, if you want to decrease your chances of a melted stator or rectifier. The problem with having a 30-40 amp max load on the batteries is that they are always in a state of discharge, and the motor's charging system will always be maxed out. That really increases the chances of burning it up.
The bottom line is that the charging system of the outboard was not designed to handle that kind of load back in 1979. There were not such things as 500 watt car amps and 1000 watt portable inverters back then. It was designed to top your battery off, run the lights and a couple of 1 amp accessories.

I am sure the 9amp one is compatible. as far as I can see it is a direct replacement for the OEM part - 581957. At first I did think i would have to upgrade other parts of the system but maybe the rectifier/regulator can handle 9amps and that is why CDI electronics have taken this into account when making their replacement for it. Part no 173-3724. At least I hope this is the case anyway.
I understand that the outboards charging system was never designed for anything more than to maintain a battery that only powered a couple of navigation lights and bilge pump, i was just hoping there would be an easy way to upgrade.
I was actually thinking of using a portable generator at first but I wanted to make sure that upgrading the charging supply was not an option. So guess its time to purchase a generator. Thanks again for all comments and suggestions.
