How's this for lifting up your motor??

Hey guys,
We have a 83 Johnson 70HP motor. As it doesn't have hydraulic trim/tilt, we have to manually lift/lower the motor. That being said, to lift the motor, we've been taking off the cover and lifting it up by grabbing the flywheel and pulling back...hard...is that ok?

I know the flywheel is on good(it has a nut on it and you need a gear puller to get it off :D), but is it ok to put that kinda pressure and angle on that part? I'd hate to damage the motor by doing that...

The cover doesn't have a handle built into the back of it?

Long story, but the back latch doesn't catch, so only the front latch locks. So, you can't grab from the back handle...

I'd fix the cover latch. I don't know if you'd damage the flywheel but I'm picturing a scenario where you're lifting the motor and your hands turn the flywheel and you end up with some pinched fingers. Whatever parts you need for your hood latch repair should be available inexpensively from one of the outboard salvage places. I got great service from http://www.tcoutboard.com/

hey EZ, 1st, thanks for responding to the post and helping out! Very much appreciated! :)

We tried to fix the back latch part before, but it seems like the way the engine is sitting, there is no way to get it to fit. It almost seems like the motor wasn't set *quite* right in the housing...hard to explain. Tried to bend the clip on the cover,(looks like previous owner did too) and it started to break, so we stopped.

There is a good, "grip" from under the fly wheel, so I don't think us getting hurt would be a problem(we use a rag too) I'm more worried about the hurting the engine...:D But good points!

isn't there a piston in there to assist with that? how often do you pick it up? out of the water I always just lifted mine by the skeg..

Normally, we pull the boat out as much as we can then I jump in the water and lift...there are some grabbable areas by the prop. But this solution is drier and easier...no chance of scraping the engine on the ground as we pull the boat out...

No piston that I know of, there is a metal hole that is on the engine that might be usable, but I'd need to make a handle/grip because I can't get a good grip on the hole. Looks like the hole is used to hold the engine up via a lift if you were doing maintainance on it...

To answer your question, no you won't hurt anything by tugging on the flywheel. It is a heck of a lot stronger than that. But having it accidently fire and wipe out some fingers is a real concern.

YES.

I understand about the latch but look into those levers you use to pull motors up; maybe you can figure a way to hook it on. But I'd spend more time with the latch, or rig something there. Those latches can be aggravating I know.

Unlock the tilt, gun it just a little in reverse She'll come right up. I have 230lbs of 80hp V4 and no hydraulics, but a latching hood thank goodness, when I raise it while in the water, it's like 1...2....3......heave! I'm skinny and have to get some leg kick action in there too.
