Ok, so I spot an add for a likely project boat as it said it was a 96 Bayliner with a cracked block (from last winter) but was otherwise in good shape. Called the owner and drove a bit over an hour to look it over.

When I get there the boat is sitting in the back yard resting on the tongue jack, and no cover on it. Hmmm, not good but hey I am here so may as well take a look.

Walked to the rear of the boat to check the outdrive and seen this. He said "oh yeah, I forgot to mention I backed into the garage and busted the ski platform but its ok because I filled the hole with some great stuff foam and it doesn't leak water any more." When I looked at the bottom of the ski platform its cracked all the way to the transom.

Looked in the boat and every seat and every piece of vinyl in the boat is garbage. The seat foam and frames have rotted to nothing and the everywhere I stepped the deck sagged. Sagged as in I thoiught I would go through it!

Looked at the trailer and my guess is he hit a curb or other imovable object because the port side wheel has moved back about 4" compared to the starboard side, owner claims it tows just fine.

What is he asking for this gem of a fixer upper (his words)? Only $1400! What a deal! I said thanks but I will have to pass. He asked what my best offer would be and I said I won't make one because its going to be insulting. He said come on, hit me with the best number you can. Umm, ok, if you insist. I won't charge you anything to come back with my flatbed trailer and load it up and haul it away. (The only reason I was willing to do that was it had a brand new SEI drive that hasn't even been in the water yet.) he declined the offer. :D

Just one more frog I had to kiss...

Can't believe he didn't take your offer - it was very fair! Sure you noted that the photos were taken 1/7/02.........long time for any owner to be looking at that gash.

The seller probably thinks he is a great and experienced mariner offering you his valuable words of wisdom and a great deal. What a shame you wasted your time.

Yeah, I understand what you are talking about Bubba. I'll never understand why anyone would let anything they have of value sit out in the open, uncovered and uncared for...let alone give it the obvious abuse some of this stuff sees.
I mean, why not just take cash out into the yard and throw into the trees to watch it blow away???
Keep lookin' dude your chances get better with ever ad you do respond to!!;)BP:):)

I must have gone through 30+ sellers before I eventually bought one. Most of the experiences are like yours. If it runs at all, it runs "great". If it floats, its in great shape despite being waterlogged and rusted. All rust is surface rust. I even had one guy try to flat out lie to get me to buy when he found out I was 1st time buyer. The ancient evinrude outboard started making odd noises and lost most power while we were on a test ride. He looks at his friend and tries to act casual asking if he put crankcase oil in it, the friend looks confused, then tells me he bets it's because the crankcase oil. I left quick and 2 days later he sends me an email saying he checked and the crankcase oil of this 2 stroke is little low which caused the breakdown.. Right... I was tempted to punch that guy.

I hate people like that. I ran a want ad on cr for a fixer upper boat and motor, I talked to a guy on the phone that told me he had a older 17ft inboard boat and all it needed was a starter solenoid. I went there and looked at it, the motor was cracked on the intake, head and basically anything that water goes threw. The bottom of the boat had three very poorly done repairs and the seats, floor were rotted. He didn't even have a title for it. He wanted $750 and kept telling me the trailer is worth at least that, It had a bent tung, two dry rotted tires, rust and I'll bet the rollers were not any good either. It would cost $750 to take that piece of **** to the dump.

How much was the brand new SEI drive worth?
