What 2 cycle oil is OK

I have recently purchased a boat with a 1991 150hp Evinrude outboard motor that uses 2 cycle TC-W3 oil. With the boat the previous owner gave me a 1/2 used gallon of Johnson/Evinrude XD-50 2 cycle oil. The question I have is is it ok to switch from this "synthetic" blend to a non synthetic blend oil like premium blend Sierra TC-W3 2 cycle oil or Evinrude XD-30?

Yes. Even Wal-Mart oil or anything else as long as it's rated TC-W3 is fine.

Re: What 2 cycle oil is OK

It's OK but not necessarily the best thing for the motor.

The XD-50 TC-W3 oil contains a built-in de-carbon treatment which is good for preventive maintenance.

Synthetic and synthetic blend TC-W3 oils generally have higher flash points, resulting in less carbon build-up and plug fouling.

Full synthetic TC-W3 oils are generally listed as biodegradable which is better for the environment.

My twin 1995 150's have gobbled up many (70-80) gallons of Walmart brand TCW-3 oil. Their still happily slurping at he well :)

Thanks guys....I guess my real question is...like in cars once you switch to synthetic oil you can't go back to regular oil. Is that true for 2 cycle oil? the previous owner must have used this XD-50 vs non synthetic type

You can go back to either one.

If you use TC-W3 oil that has a built-in de-carbon additive such as XD-50 has, then you don't need to add Carbon Guard or Ring Free or whatever to keep the carbon down.

Mobil has been in the synthetic business since the beginning; here's their answer on switching: http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Car_Care/AskMobil/Switching_Synthetic_Motor_Oil.aspx

I'm not sure that this is true --- like in cars once you switch to synthetic oil you can't go back to regular oil.

Any takers or another Mythbusters episode?

Not switching between synthetic and non-synthetic oil is indeed an old wives tale. In fact you can even mix the two although that does present the possiblity that incompatible additives could cause an issue over time. But my owners manual says its ok.
