Re: Burnt Piston and Scared Sleeve

You'd have to remove and disassemble the powerhead, down to the bare block.

Then you'd need to take it to a machine shop that specializes in boring outboard motor cylinders. They'll measure the damaged cyl and tell you whether the cylinder damage can be fixed by boring-out the cyl to an oversize. New oversized piston & rings are installed in the overbored cylinder.

Naturally the other cylinders should be checked also to make sure wear & taper is within specifications. New bearings, seals, rings, gaskets & other consumables as required complete the repairs.

If the cylinder is damaged beyond repair, the bad sleeve can be removed and a new one reinstalled. This can be an expensive proposition, depending on where you send it.

At any rate, none of this will be cheap. And whether it's worth it or not can only be your decision.

Note that besides repairing the damage done to your powerhead, you'll need to figure out what made it that way in the first place. Maybe a carb is plugged, causing lean mix, could be lots of other problems too. But if you don't fix what burnt up that cyl in the first place, it could happen again & who needs that!!!

You might also consider a factory-built powerhead which would come with a warranty. There are many rebuilders across the country who do this as well. If you can't do the work yourself, a good marine shop should be able to do the removal of the old powerhead & install of new for a nominal fee. You should also replace the impeller in addition to any other maintenance performed.

Anyway, the above barely scratches the surface, but maybe it'll give you something to think about.
