1999 johnson 150 hp gt

motor will only run up to 2000 rpms and shakes and skips this problem happened with previous owner. he said the carbs needed work. the fuel he was using was a problem. is this a common problem in the 150 gt 1999 model

old fuel, water in fuel, poor maintainance. improper timing, spark etc, can all cause these problems on any motor, not just that one. check spark, compression, air leak fuel lines.

As TD said, take a compression test followed by a spark test. Perhaps only 1/2 the cylinders are getting spark.

Is it possible it is going into S.L.O.W. mode?

I think SLOW mode is 2500 rpms, not for sure though, sounds more like carb/fuel problems.
